Bush to screen population for mental illness

"President Bush plans to unveil next month a sweeping mental health initiative that recommends screening for every citizen and promotes the use of expensive antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs favored by supporters of the administration.

The New Freedom Initiative, according to a progress report, seeks to integrate mentally ill patients fully into the community by providing "services in the community, rather than institutions," the British Medical Journal reported.

Critics say the plan protects the profits of drug companies at the expense of the public."

i'm all for treating the mentally ill humanely, hell, i am one. but i think screening for every citizen it a bit too big brother-esque for me. is this bush's way of ferreting out all the radicals? or just his way of keeping everyone doped up so they don't notice the little things...like the miserable failure the iraqi war has become, or his connections w/ enron?

i happened to have been joking. but what if i had been sexually abused? how would your comment have helped. i dont mind other people reading my journal. all i ask is that they be considerate in doing so.

if you had been abused, i would've understood. and the question wasn't framed in a "haha, your daddy touched your naughty places" kind of way. it was polite.
