They really broke Sonic. But if you'll notice, they also broke Phantasy Star (don't get me started /cry), Shining Force, Shinobi and... that's it, because all their other famous, notable brands have been left to dwindle in obscurity. and hazy arcade memory.

There's a new Golden Axe in the works, and if it looks like it was worked on by professionals it might be a good thing. It is being done by a 3rd party, but I forget whom.
